The five most common causes of a frozen AC coil and what you can fix yourself before calling.
A frozen evaporator coil is one of the most common AC service calls we get every summer. The good news: a few causes are easy DIY fixes.
Cause #1: Dirty air filter. Restricted airflow drops coil temperature below freezing. Turn off the AC, replace the filter, and run the fan-only setting for an hour to thaw.
Cause #2: Closed or blocked vents. Closing too many supply registers can cause freezing. Open them up.
Cause #3: Low refrigerant. This is a service call — a leak somewhere is dropping pressure and causing the freeze. We can find the leak and repair it.
Cause #4: Failed blower motor or fan. No air movement = frozen coil.
Cause #5: Dirty evaporator coil. Years of dust accumulation insulate the coil. A professional cleaning solves it.
