Filter change frequency, MERV ratings, and the cheapest way to extend your HVAC system’s life.
The single cheapest thing you can do for your HVAC system is change the air filter on schedule. Yet it’s the #1 maintenance task homeowners forget.
For most East Texas homes: change a 1-inch filter every 1–2 months. Change 4 or 5-inch media filters every 6‒9 months.
Higher MERV isn’t always better. MERV 8–11 is the sweet spot for most homes. MERV 13+ filters can restrict airflow if your system isn’t designed for them.
If you have pets, allergies, or your home is in a high-pollen area, lean toward the shorter end of the range.
